UNDERSTANDING BOTULINUM TOXIN TREATMENTS
Botulinum toxin (“Botox" is one of several brand names) is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It has been used for cosmetic enhancements and the management of various medical conditions for several years.
In its natural form it can cause botulism, however, when used in controlled, minute doses for medical purposes, is safe and highly effective to smooth wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. Botulinum toxin type A is the most widely used in clinical practice.
Botulinum toxin works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to specific muscles. When injected, it prevents the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction. As a result, the targeted muscles relax. This effect can reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles—those caused by repeated facial movements—and, in therapeutic settings, relieve muscle spasms or excessive activity.
Botulinum toxin is mostly used to address the visible signs of ageing, creating a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Popular treatment areas include:
Forehead lines
Frown lines (glabellar lines or "11s")
Crow’s feet (lines around the eyes)
Bunny lines (on the nose)
Chin dimpling (mental crease)
Neck bands (platysmal bands)
Lip lines ("smoker’s lines")
Another indication is Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, especially in the underarms, palms, and soles. This has been proven to be a gold standard treatment in peer review studies for under arms compared to other treatment modalities. An initial thorough consultation is necessary to discuss your aesthetic or medical goals, review your medical history, and determine which areas of concern can be safely and effectively treated.
The procedure is minimally invasive and typically takes 10–30 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated. The treatment involves using a fine needle to inject small amounts of botulinum toxin directly into the targeted muscles.
Most patients report only mild discomfort, often described as a pinching or stinging sensation.
Initial effects may become noticeable within 2–5 days, with the full result typically visible at two weeks. The smoothing and muscle-relaxing effects last, on average, 3–4 months, after which the treated muscles gradually return to their normal activity. Regular maintenance treatments can help sustain your desired appearance or therapeutic benefit.
It is important to choose a practitioner that has a knowledge of the anatomy and potential complications and contraindications of the procedure to minimise the risk of unwanted effects (temporary drooping of eyelids or eyebrows also known as ptosis, mild asymmetry). They should be medically qualified.
